Coming to an end

As the semester is coming to an end, I wanted to take the time and look back over this past semester. This semester went pretty quick for me; It could be that we only have class two days a week or it could be because I enjoyed this English class. We had the freedom to explore our own ways of finding a solution to a problem on campuses that we chose. My group deiced to do Food, we may not have changed the food its self but we did manage to inform the students about the food and what they were eating. There was one student that was surprised that there are that many calories in one sandwich that he ate every day. We made a small change to something big on campuses but with one little step we may be able to start a big change for someone else that decide they want to voice their opion on the food. Over this semester we took a survey, made nutrition cards, researched nutrition facts, and made a couple videos to name a few things.
My group worked well together during meetings and class time. We would meet on Sundays and some times during the week as well as class. We would meet to decide what we needed to do an work on the projects. At the beginning it was hard for us to get everything done and stay on task. Now that we know each other we get along better and work well as a group. One of the times class was canceled my group decided to meet in Dixon and work on our project we stayed there from 3-420 like our normal class period. My group worked things out really well and got through any problems that we faced over the semester. I enjoyed this class a great deal because of our freedom of what we worked on each class period

English class for today.

Today for class we were told to go to the English conferences in the sub. I though well I guess I should go I didn’t want to go and keep pushing it off. Telling myself oh well it is all day, 9-4 so I can go when ever. When it hit 150 I was like well let’s get this over with. I walked over to the sub and to my surprise there were a lot of people there. I looked over the list of presentations that would be taking place during the next session and I found one called Memoirs with three presenters. I decided to go into this one and see what the people had to say; to my surprise I enjoyed it quite a bit. My favorite presentation was by Jasmine Hunt called “A trip down memory lane to KU”. I connected with her piece the most because she is a freshman and also went through summer start like I did. One thing that really stuck out for me was when she talked about getting the acceptance letter and being so happy. Until she read the line saying that she needed to go to summer start before being allowed to start in the fall. There was one week in the way of her future. Her stomach dropped just like mine did when I read my letter. She thought about it and everything was lying in that week at KU where you took the summer start class. After she got through that week she knew she was in and was able to be happy to be coming to KU. She was so scared but excited to go to the summer start though. This was one of the first times she got to be on her own and feel the freedom of collage. This is when she saw that she was ready for school. This is just how I felt I knew since I started my senior year of night school that I was ready to be out on my own and start collage but there was the little thing in the back of my head telling me can I really do it all on my own. Can I make it? After seeing myself away for the one week and see that I could really do this all on my own, I couldn’t wait to start in the fall with classes. As the school years coming to an end I am not sure how much I am going to like moving back into my house and not being on my own making my own decisions. It’s going to be another change that we have to go through as we grow up. Only the future can tell what will come out of things.

Todays Project Work

Today was such a nice day out my group and I decided to hand out are nutrition facts cards. We went to the sub and then walked over to academic forum. Outside of the sub we started handing out the card some people would say thank you and some would just throw away the cards. There was one kid that looked at the cards and found a sandwich that he eats every day. He say wish I would have seen this before I ate that sandwich and I eat this every day. I believe that by handing out card the students at Kutztown are starting to be able to see what they really eat in a day. It is just a start to helping the students but you have to start small to get somewhere.

After we handed some out outside of the sub we went inside where we took a video of Maura handing out the cards to a student. After we took the video he started asking why we wanted to do this. We explained that it was a English project, were we all have different topics and we are trying to help fix’s the problem to improve are community. He found this project cool and a good topic to focus on.

When we finished at the sub we went over to the Academic forum where there weren’t many people. We handed out some cards and left some on some tables for people to see when they sit down. The people in the AF didn’t have much interested in the nutrition facts. That also could be because there weren’t many people there. By this time we saw that the time was only a little after three. We still had about a half hour to work on our PowerPoint. So we sat and put some of the facts and pictures onto the PowerPoint on my laptop. When we finished working on that we decided to head over to our meeting. We all meet together with Dr. Morris and discussed are project for a little, then decided to meet on Sunday to finish up last minute things before our project is due. Over all I feel that our project is moving along quite well and we are starting to actually spread the word about what the students at Kutztown University consume.

Library

Today in class we all had the chance to work on our projects in our groups. Everyone in class went to the library where we then meet with Dr. Morris and split up.To do our group work were we deiced what would be best to work on at the time. My group decide to split up the food places on campus. After we decide where each of us would be doing the nutrition facts. We all got laptops and started to make the papers to hand out at the dinning halls. We spent the whole class time working on the research and formats of are nutrition cards. I got the majority of my part done but still need to work more on mine to fit the card. I also wen't and got paper so that we would be printing on paper that is thicker and easier for someone to keep for a longer period of time. During class time on Wednesday we are meeting to work on the final parts of each others nutrition cards and put them together. We will also be talking about when we would like to hand out these cards. I am really happy with the work that my group in getting done. I feel like we are working well together and doing a really good job of staying on task this time. We are planing on writing an article for the local school paper, handing out nutrition cards, and working on informing the students of what there choices are on campus.
